How

Each scarf/shirt begins as sketch!

Each design is configured by images drawn from Tabor’s sketches. She compiles different layers that are then exposed to screens and printed by hand. Why screen printing? This process opens up the options to play and have complete control of the end product. It allows for the exploration of color and pattern that doesn’t happen in a digital world. So when you purchase one of these objects you are supporting Tabor in pursuing her love of the craft and artistic freedoms that come with it.

These designs are printed in small batches giving them each their own beautiful imperfection. These are not made by machine, but made with screens, ink, dyes, silk, cotton, wool and my hands ;)

Story

Tabor Shiles, a dynamic artist and adventurer. Originally hailing from the suburbs outside of Philadelphia, Tabor honed her craft, earning a BA in Printmaking at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she also delved into Fibers arts.

Chicago became the canvas for Tabor's artistic journey, immersing herself in the city's vibrant print community. The pinnacle of her early career was being accepted into the Artist in Resident Program at Lillstreet Art Center, where her focus shifted seamlessly from the textile department to the printmaking department in successive years.

Embarking on an unconventional hiatus from the arts in 2020, Tabor sailed into a year-long adventure on a 29 ft sailboat, transforming its aft cabin into a makeshift darkroom for cyanotypes. The marriage of sunlight and water birthed compositions that celebrated the beauty of the ocean and the freedom of a nomadic lifestyle.

As Tabor sails into new horizons, her work remains a testament to the interplay between process, community, and the ever-changing landscapes that shape her artistic narrative. Whether printing on scarves, crafting cyanotypes on a sailboat, or exploring the depths of teaching and residencies, Tabor Shiles continues to weave a vibrant tapestry that echoes the harmony of the creative spirit and the boundless seas.
